Many times travelers feel safe once they have reached their hotel destination.  However, just because hotels are packed with other visitors doesn’t mean that it isn’t a target for thieves and other predators.  AAA urges travelers to keep the following thoughts in mind:
  • Safety in numbers. If you’re a woman traveling alone, consider booking the room and checking in as husband and wife.  To avoid a double charge, phone the desk shortly after your arrival to let them know that “Mr.” won’t be coming after all.
  • Study the fire exit plan. Make a note of the exits nearest your room.
  • Don’t attract attention. Avoid displaying large amounts of cash, jewelry or other valuables at the registration desk or lobby.
  • Keep your door shut. Use your peep hole to find out who’s at the door before opening it. Never open the door to anyone claiming to be hotel services person unless you’ve called for one. If in doubt, call the front desk and ask to confirm the identity of the person. Make sure all connecting or patio doors are locked.
  • Don’t hang the “make up this room” card on your door.  It’s an invitation to burglars looking for easy pickings. If the maid doesn’t clean the room, you can always call housekeeping later in the day.
  • Use a safe. Don’t leave valuables in the room unless they are safely locked up.
