Summer is just around the corner, and with summer comes the time to get your RV out of storage and ready for the road and campgrounds. Here are some maintenance, regulation and preparation tips for making your summer RV trips a splendid affair!
- Tires: The most fundamental aspect of any vehicle, tires are what keep your RV moving safely and effectively. Checking tire pressure, tread and lugnut torque are essentials for preparing any automobile for road travel.
- Water: One of the main joys of an RV is that you always have the modern convenience of plumbing available. This produces one of the main terrors of RV ownership: winterizing and de-winterizing your water systems. The easiest way to care for your water system is gravity drying in fall, and flushing the system with water before using in summer. If you used anti-freeze in your system, then you need to flush the system multiple times, until the water smells and tastes clean.
- Check (and Clean) Appliances: Hopefully you properly cleaned your appliances before storing your RV for winter, but if you didn't, this is the time to make certain all spills and sticky substances are cleaned from the fridge, stove, sink and other appliances. Next, check all gas lines, water lines and electrical lines for evidence of leaks, animal damage or other damages. Replace hoses with leaks, bite marks or too much discoloration (corrosion in PVC or other pipes is often primarily identified by discoloration).
- Re-Check Insurance, Tags and License: Speak to an independent insurance agent to ensure that laws have not significantly changed in your state regarding RV insurance or other regulatory measures. Also check to make sure you have an adequate and competitively priced RV insurance package.
- Check all Operations: Waste tank valves, generators, engine, electrical, water intake, windows, engine, transmission and heating/cooling systems must be checked. All these functions should be tested when you are near home and your preferred RV mechanic, before the stress of the open road introduces you to your RV problems.
