Summer is a great time for families to pack up the children and head out on a driving vacation.  Taking these car trips with children can be extremely difficult and can make parents avoid long trips at all costs.  The key to traveling with children is being prepared and keeping them occupied.

AAA offers a few tips when traveling with your children:

  1. Always use a car safety seat for infants and booster seats young children. A child who has outgrown its car safety seat with a harness should ride in a belt-positioning booster seat until the vehicle's seat belt fits properly.  For additional child passenger restraint information, log onto
  2. All children under 13 years of age should ride in the back seat of vehicles.
  3. Set a good example by always wearing a seat belt.
  4. Children can easily become restless or irritable when on a long road trip. Try to keep them occupied by pointing out interesting sights along the way and by bringing soft, lightweight toys and favorite CDs for a sing-along.
  5. Engage children in the planning of the trip and the mapping process to avoid the “are we there yet?” question.
  6. Never leave your child alone in a car, even for a minute. Temperatures inside the car can reach deadly levels in minutes, and the child can die of heat stroke.

Whether you're driving across the state or across the country, it is very important to ensure everyone’s safety. Each child has their own safety and entertainment needs, depending upon age and size, so plan ahead and enjoy your summer travels!
